More shocking than tonight’s enjoyable VP debate is that the Dodgers have the Cubs down 9-1 going into the top of the 9th in Wrigley Field tonight. My friends from Chicago will say that this is just the way it’s supposed to, and maybe that’s true. Still, I’m more than a little surprised to see the Cubs down 2-0 in a best of five before they’ve even played a game in LA. This could very well be over in 3 games.

Johnny Pesky played ball back in the 1940s. He was of the era where his stats line is broken up because he went off to fight World War II. He was friends with guys like DiMaggio, Williams and Doerr (for whom the book Teammates is written about). His only World Series as a player was the magical 1946 season – the first season with all of the stars back from the war. The Red Sox were said to have fate on their side, only to lose in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Yet, despite retiring in 1954, Johnny Pesky never left baseball and (while even playing for Detroit and Washington and coaching in the New York and Pittsburgh systems) the Red Sox. In fact he was, and continues to be, invited to sit in the Red Sox dugout – in uniform – during home games. His official title is “instructor” since he is neither coach nor manager, but it should be “spiritual guru.” Johnny Pesky is Mr. Red Sox. Heck, we even named a piece of Fenway after him.
In a time when guys like Nomar and Manny purposefully sulk their way out of Boston and guys like A-Rod and Damon go to the highest bidder, Johhny Pesky is the embodiment of dedication and loyalty. He has been a part of the Red Sox in some fashion for the vast majority of the last sixty-sixty years. At 89 years old, that’s two-thirds of his life given to one team. Who else can say that? How many people are going to give two-thirds of their life to an organization the way Johnny Pesky has?
Congratulation Number 6. Never has a retired number been so well deserved.
Now, let’s retire Jimmy Walsh’s number for being the first and only Irish born Sox player…

The McCain has become the pathological liar who – even when the truth is on their side – still feels the need to embellish, exaggerate and lie. Their spin is so out of control, McCain seems lost within his own campaign as if he’s being the script not in its entirety, not even page by page, but word by word.
Benjamin Netenyahu basically steals the campaign website of Barack Obama. Or maybe Obama gave it to him to use. He is a friend of Israel, right?
